Three December Pictures

Something of a lapse in posts of late, so a few images grabbed over recent weeks to get the ball rolling again.

A Green Woodpecker in the garden snapped through the back window.  Not the first time one has appeared on this blog, but this is an improvement on the last picture.  It probed the lawn for some time before bounding off – proof of the continued working of the soil whatever the season.

Coot and Mallard loafing among the sepia-hued reeds during late afternoon.  Hidden somewhere is a Water Rail – unseen but heard shrieking from the cover of the crowded stems.

With Hen Harrier and Short-eared Owl quartering the open ground and wildfowl and waders crowded onto the shallow-water scrapes at Wallasea Wetlands, I wonder how many birders noticed the unlikely presence of the summer-flowering Wild Carrot blooming in December?
