Breakfast

Another one of those hastily grabbed picture through the kitchen window.  While I was enjoying my breakfast this morning so too was this handsome male sparrowhawk (of which the image does scant justice) on the shed roof.  In its grasp and just out of shot is what looked to be a starling.

It put me a mind of a short piece of verse I penned a few years ago.

Table Manners

The robin – observant and assured,

The dunnock – diligently unobtrusive,

The greenfinches form a disorderly queue.

The blackbird – cocksure and alert,

The blue tit – nervously energetic,

The long-tailed so confidingly thorough.

The dove – careful and deliberate,

The chaffinch – watchfully polite,

The starling all the things they are not.

And the sparrowhawk…
